Marconi Wireless

Carl Nesensohn/Associated Press
Norman Corwin died this week at the age of 101.  He was a pioneer during the golden age of radio and used this new medium to reach the heights of expression and wonder and make the audience a part of the storytelling.  He reported on the front-lines of wars telling the real human stories that made us close to the action, and thus personally invested in the fight for freedom, the real thing, not some souped up idea.  Later, the corporate "Man" took away his freedoms and radio fell down the path of "vulgarity, venality and even cowardice that, in later years, was to blight the medium.”

To celebrate his fine mustache, please donate to the Clover Club Team for Mustaches for a Cure.

To celebrate Mr. Corwin, enjoy a Marconi Wireless, a classic autumn twist on the Manhattan made with apple brandy.

Yes, I read Playboy for the Articles

Well, for once this is true as Playboy has seen fit to publish their interaction with Hunter S. Thompson over the years.  There is even his hangover cure scribbled on a notepad from the Beverly Hills Hotel.

I myself have that strange longing for the days of Gonzo journalism when the world could not be explored of experienced by sitting on front of your computer.  And I know I have a habit of getting lost in old school escape like TV and cinema and even the occasional book, that dog-eared old thing.  But until I build my TARDIS, it is the only way I can time travel.  Maybe I'll go outside today and try to explore something happening right now.

But since this is all part of the publicity for Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, I'll leave you with another fine Mustache and remind you to contribute money to the Mustache growing warriors at Clover Club.

Mustaches for a Cure

So Movember is right around the corner, and we have finally caught up on this side of the pond.  Do you part and help sponsor bartender brother Brad Ferran and these handsome lads from the Clover Club.  Brad has been know to grow a killer Mustache/porkchop combo in the past.  Its a favorite face of mine for sure.

On my Baseball and Boys Blog I have begun cataloging some of my favorite mustaches.  Keith Hernandez and his mustache get a full on film treatment, natch.

In honor of the fine faces of Clover Club, another shot of a most noble and sacred mustache.

Clover Clubby Bloggy Brunchie

All Beautiful photos thanks to Lush Life Productions
Ok, that title is grammatically incorrect...Or is it on words that you make up? I think I'll declare its acceptable.

This past Sunday I met with other gorgeous bloggers (yup, that's not really a word either says spell check) and hosted by the always lovely Dizzy Fizz and Clover Club.

We were welcomed into the stunning back room by Katie Darling and Ms. Julie Reiner herself serving us a tasty tart punch. I have heard tell that the Clover Club is Julie's baby and it shows. This place is a class act from top to bottom (although I do miss the Happy Hours that briefly appeared at the tale end of last summer...Please bring them back!).

Mmmmm...Bacon Tasting...
After some networking and catching up with some friends, we sat down for some family style Deviled eggs, baguettes with jam and the famous tasting of bacon. My first experience at the Clover Club was Brunch and this incredible tasting of bacon, so I tried to let everyone share the joy. There might have been an incident with the sharing of the Deviled eggs, however, if we were not so civilized and friendly.

The incident inducing Deviled Eggs

During this luscious first course, Julie and Katie stirred up gorgeous Oaxacan Daisy's while Jen Craig told us all about Sombra Mescal. I was not aware that they used the same distillery at Del Maguey. I was aware that its strong smokey flavor reminds me of licking a tractor tire. But sometimes I am feeling a bit barnyard. You can take the girl out of the country....

Our second course was a choice between a Lamb Burger, Baked Eggs with truffle and leeks or Pork and Grits. I guess the Southern part of me was sticking out today because I went for the grits. I have had the truffle eggs before and I still declare them the winner. My grits were good, but the poached egg a bit over done for my taste and I needed Tabasco.

Unfortunately, I was not able to wait for it as Bocce duty called for my Sunday game at Floyd and I had to leave early..booo!

But not b
efore I quickly sucked back a Bloody Maria made with Partida Tequila. Yum!

Joannie Loves Bocce (the best team and team name in the universe) was indeed victorious that day, winning a decisive 3 game set.

And Selena from Dizzy Fizz was also victorious in throwing a wonderful event. I look forward to more in the future and meeting again with all my blogger-in-laws.

The Happiest of Hours

Ask not for whom happy hour tolls...
It is hard to be on Smith Street in Brooklyn these days and not get pulled into one of my favorite haunts. Renee at Zombie Hut served be the first hot cider of the season yesterday warming my blustery wind tossed soul.

And of course no visit to Brooklyn would be complete without a stop in at The Clover Club. They are moving the staff up there quickly. My bartender was in training the last time I was in, but he knew the drinks and shakes them like a pro now. They still had their summer menu out, and although I was disappointed not to try some fall cocktails, this was assuaged by the fact that the specials were almost half off. That right...a Happy Hour at the Clover Club! Hot damn, that means I can have two! And maybe have some chips fried in duck fat with truffles and just break a twenty!

Since it seemed like a recession special, I decided to take a recession vacation during happy hour. I started with the Roman Holiday; a refreshing collaboration of gin, Aperol, St Germain, Riesling, lemon and soda, served on the rocks in a big thin white wine glass. The grapefruit peel and the grapefruit notes in the Aperol counteracted the sweetness of the St Germain and wine perfectly. I tried imagining myself under Roman skies in a lovely outdoor cafe be romanced by Gregory Peck, but the Riesling just made me think of Gregory Peck from the Boys in Brazil. Ok. Maybe I should be in Bavaria, being romanced by a handsome German prince instead.... Ja, wunderbar.

Next I went to Cuba for a Hemingway Daiquiri. The theme here is the fresh grapefruit. Rum, maraschino liquor, lime, grapefruit and sugar. So simple and yet so delicious.

Two cocktails later (I skipped the chips so I could be a bigger tipper...recession, you know) I was happy! Its a recession miracle! And I was ready to Mambo out of there.

Johnny Castle? Where are you? Baby needs to Mambo!
