Dreaming of Bar Snacks

The Dining section of the NY TImes today has a story about the good nosh being served at some cocktail joints, an idea I alluded to last week in my whithering Cabrito post. Nice to see we are in agreement about Employees Only and PDT. And The Bloody Beast is my favorite at Blind Tiger!

Writer Julia Moskin also mentioned Pegu Club. While I have found cocktail perfection there (they have the most well balanced and satisfying cocktails AND Lady bartenders!), I have found their food spotty. The crab cake sliders were divine but the summer rolls were bland and uninspiring. Still, very nice and interesting snacks to go with some pretty spectacular cocktails.

Mad WoMen

Had a "two martini" lunch today with my costume designer at Cabritios. I have the same complaint I had when it was BarFry...woefully overpriced. They really don't seem to have their act together in that space. They don't even have the special "Cabrito" goat dish for which the place is named. And their website is still listed as barfrynyc.

The $14 specialty Heritage pork green chili stew should have been an $8 starter and actually came with flour tortillas. How do you put a watery soup in a tortilla, I ask you?! And the dinner menu looks exactly the same except with higher prices. The exception seems to be the cremita. Like a Mexican sandwich, cousin to my beloved tortas, they looked delicious and were priced the same for lunch and dinner.

The cocktails I had (actually a Margarita, with orange and "The Bee's knees", a gin, citrus, peach-honey syrup and peach bitters concoction) were lovely and well balanced, but still served in too small a glass to warrant the $10 and $12 price tag, respectively. Actually...I guess I pay that much for Employees Only or PDT cocktails. But look at what delicious and well priced food you have to nosh on at those establishments?!? Its somehow makes the cocktails seem worth it. You gotta have good grub!

I have just dropped over $40 on lunch and I have to go get a slice now. Grrrr.

Redneck Mimosa

Ah Summertime! Casual Fridays at work. Flip flops all week. Lunch breaks at the pool. Showing up 1/2 an hour late for weekend Bocce. Its just a time to be a bit more relaxed in your day to day life. Don't you wish all year was like that?

So RyeGirl is not ashamed to post about a low end drink, the Redneck Mimosa. Just the simple mix of Colt '45 and Orange juice in a 50 cent Ikea wineglass. Poured to perfection on a summer Sunday here at Floyd in Brooklyn.

RyeGirl was skeptical at first, but after seeing Walker's look of satisfaction below, she decided to give it a sip. Surprisingly light (or Lite?) and refreshing. A well balanced mix of daily vitamins and booze that sure is lighter on my wallet than my class Bocce drink, The Maker's 8 (Bourbon and Ale 8, a Kentucky brand of caffeinated ginger ale). And due to the rise in the price of both bourbon and Ale 8, Floyd has stopped giving you the whole bottle of ginger goodness with your bourbon! Horror! How will I dilute?!

Looks like I'll have a Redneck Mimosa, Thanks.

Margaritas by the Sea, Mamacita!

Oh we have been having a loverly summer here in NYC. Sorry for the lack of posting but I have either been in summer camp hell, or summertime fun bliss.

And why not have fun in this city in the summertime? There is so many free concerts, outdoor picnics, and baseball game activities my social calendar has been bursting at the seems.

July was not only RyeGirls' birthday month but the wrap of of a winning softball season. Despite starting the season with a bang (literally I took a bat to the face catching), it ended with some smooth drinks at sometime rivals/friends hang out, The Zombie Hut on 5th Ave in Brooklyn. Look how beautiful the girls look all decked out in floral after a sweaty softball game?! Oooh Ladies!

What better way to cool off after a hot game than one of Renee's Cucarita's! This cool yet spicy drink is made with muddled cucumbers, tequila blanco, sour mix (homemade, natch) and sriracha for that kick. Yum yum. What could be better after a softball victory? Especially when it is mixed by this Hottie Boombalottie (whose name is NOT Vince by the way...)
