Holy Trinity

The three distilleries on Islay that probably receive the most play are Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroig.  All three are situated by the sea a close walking distance from eachother and the souther ferry town of Port Ellen.  Used to visiters, they all have wonderful centers and a friendly staff who is keen on spreading the good word of whiskey.

Our first stop was in Lagavulin. After a tour through the old factory that has become a one man operation due to technology, we were greeted in the warehouse by the legendary Ian MacArthur. A Lagavulin employee for 40 years and counting, this genial little man now does tastings and charms the crowd with his wit and expertise. We tasted a "baby" Lagavulin at 10 years old, a "mystery barrel" (14 year old 4th fill cask) and a beautiful 18 year old first fil Sherry cask.  Most lovely!  We also made some new friends from Oregon at this distillery.  Thanks for helping to fill my flask, gang!  Go Ducks!

Next we went down the coast to Ardbeg...
